When it was released seven months after Cobain took his own life, Nirvana: Unplugged in New York sold over 5m copies in America alone, topped the album charts in seven countries, and went on to win a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Others reckon it to be an interesting and eclectic example of the Unplugged format, but that any deeper meaning is the product of myth-making and hindsight. Some people consider it to be Kurt Cobain, the tortured genius, stripping both his songs, and himself, to the bone in a brilliant, painfully raw performance that amounts to a kind of suicide note. Opinion on Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance at Sony Music Studios in New York on November 18, 1993, is divided into two camps.

ItвЂ™s not clear at this point whether the blu-ray will offer the hi-res download or not, but it seems reasonably likely, particularly after the recent Grace Jones experiment.

The single vinyl LP comes with a download card for вЂMP3sвЂ™ (actually 320 KBPS MP4 AAC) but one advantage of opting for the 2LP 45RPM is that you get an upgraded download of hi-res 96/24 files, although as the sicker notes (see above) the two tracks from Unplugged are CD-quality 44.1kHz/16 bit. The blu-ray is stereo only affair (PCM, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD) with no surround sound option. Additionally, Nirvana will be issued on hi-res (96kHz/24bit) via a вЂPure AudioвЂ™ blu-ray audio release. This isnвЂ™t being re-released on CD but there will be two vinyl versions a standard 180g LP and a special deluxe 2LP set cut at 45RPM. The 14-track collection is a solid overview and features the last studio recording, You Know YouвЂ™re Right, all the well known singles and two tracks from the MTV Unplugged performance, including David BowieвЂ™s The Man Who Sold The World.
